The history of game shows is littered with the failures of various sports-related game shows, the one exception being the eight-year Sports Challenge from the 1970s. However, after a dearth of prime-time sports in the 1960s, Monday Night Football became a television phenomenon in 1970. So, what better than to try to make a companion piece to the show, and Monday Evening Quarterback was probably an attempt to do this.
To host the show, recently retired Green Bay Packer offensive lineman Jerry Kramer was tabbed. Having no history in the entertainment industry, let alone the game show world, he was incredibly stiff and boring. Playing the game were two teams made up of one celebrity and one current NFL player. In this case, Dick Martin and then-San Diego charger John Hadl competed against Peter Lawford and then-Washington Redskin Myron Pottios.
The rules of the game were simple and tedious. One team would be given a down-distance-yard situation from an actual NFL game and three possible choices for the play that was actually played. The team would discuss the possibilities for too long, pick a play, and if they were correct, they earned three points, or six points if the real play was a touchdown. If they were wrong or a touchdown was scored, play passed over to the other team.
And that's the game. No variation, no bonus game, and $500 worth of football equipment was donated to a local league of the winning player. This may be interesting once or twice, but having nearly 20 questions of this was definitely taxing on the eyelids. If you were curious, the two games involved were both involving the 1970 St. Louis Cardinals, their 27-17 Week 2 win vs. Washington and their 35-17 Week 7 loss at the New York Football Giants.
